Researcher, Tutor, Writer
Kay is a PhD candidate in English at the University of Southampton in the UK, where her doctoral research examines how contemporary Anglophone African women writers inherit and formally innovate within the historical novel genre. Provisionally entitled ‘Gender, Genre, and Nation in Contemporary Female-Authored African Historical Novels’, her thesis explores how women novelists rewrite histories of nation and gendered exclusion. She holds a BA (First Class Honours) and MA (Distinction) in English, and works as a PGR Demonstrator in Southampton’s English department.
Alongside her academic work, Kay runs K Tuition, an independent tutoring business founded in 2018. Kay’s approach is structured and student-centred as she designs bespoke schemes of work built around individual learning goals, examination board specifications, and realistic timelines, ensuring students are prepared with confidence well ahead of their assessments. She has experience supporting students working towards GCSEs across a range of subjects, as well as students in home education settings who require a more flexible and independently managed approach to their studies. Having the appropriate qualifications, she primarily tutors English (GCSE, A-level and undergraduate), Maths (GCSE) and Science (GCSE).
When she's not working, Kay can usually be found at the piano, exploring museums and art galleries, or travelling.
